The Dalai Lama awarded honorary degree at Convocation Hall

He is known worldwide for his spiritual leadership and commitment to the non-violent liberation of the Tibetan people, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 for promoting human rights and autonomy for Tibet. And on April 27, the Dalai Lama graced the stage at Convocation Hall to receive an honorary doctor of laws degree and the International Acharya Sushil Kumar Peace Award (established by South Asian studies at U of T’s New College).

On May 7, Nobel Peace Prize-winner Shirin Ebadi also received an honorary degree from the University of Toronto. An Iranian lawyer and human-rights activist, Ebadi is well known for defending freedom of speech and political freedom. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for promoting democracy and human rights.
