Soldiers’ Tower committee seeks funds to renovate tower

About 800 gathered on St. George campus on Remembrance Day to sing hymns, listen to readings, enjoy an anthem by the Hart House Chorus and, most of all, to honour those from U of T who died in the World Wars.

The service took place at Soldiers’ Tower, where the names of these 1,181 men and women are inscribed. “U of T people have made, in some cases, unique contributions to the survival of this country,” says Capt. John McIntyre, chair of the Soldiers’ Tower Committee. “With Soldiers’ Tower, we try to tell that great story.”

The committee is currently raising funds to renovate the 79-year-old tower. Projects include installing eight stained glass windows in the tower stairway, creating a remembrance garden and improving displays in the second-level Memorial Room – “a little gem of a museum,” says McIntyre. To donate, please contact the Annual Fund and specify Soldiers’ Tower for your contribution: 1-800-463-6048 or annual.fund@utoronto.ca.
