Kudos

Last October, a number of U of T alumni were named to the Order of Canada – this country’s highest honour for lifetime achievement. Filmmaker David Cronenberg (BA 1967 UC) was appointed an officer of the order. The following were named members: Lawrence Cherney (BA 1969 UC, MMus 1978), a widely acclaimed oboist and interpreter of contemporary music; Sister Mary Alice Danaher (MA 1971), an educator who has worked with aboriginal communities in British Columbia; Dr. Peter Newbery (BA 1961 VIC, MDiv 1966), who has helped improve the delivery of health care in rural Canada; David Partridge (BA 1941 TRIN), an artist and co-founder of the St. Catharines Art Association; Harry Rasky (BA 1949 UC), a documentary filmmaker; Gordon Swann (MScD 1952), an orthodontics specialist and leader in the field of dental forensics; Bryan Walls (DDS 1973), author of The Road that Led to Somewhere, which chronicles his ancestors’ journey to freedom via the Underground Railroad; Morden Yolles (BASc 1948), one of Canada’s leading structural engineers; and Joyce Zemans (BA 1962 UC, MA 1966), an art historian and teacher.

Brett Polegato (Mus Bac Per 1991) won a Grammy award in February in the category of Best Classical Recording for his participation in the Atlanta Symphony’s recording of Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony. Polegato was the baritone soloist.
