Alumni named to the Order of Canada

Three alumni and one honorary alumnus were among this year’s new appointments to the Order of Canada. Alan Bernstein (BSc 1968, PhD 1972), inaugural president of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and a professor of medical genetics and microbiology at U of T, was named an officer. C. Edward Medland (BA 1950 UC), appointed a member, is an investment banker who uses his business expertise to benefit various cultural and health organizations. Also named a member was Lorne Michaels (BA 1966 UC, LLD Hon. 2002), best known as the executive producer of Saturday Night Live and films such as Three Amigos and Wayne’s World. Internationally renowned architect Frank Gehry, who received a U of T honorary doctor of laws degree in 1998, was appointed an honorary companion.

This fall, Staff Sgt. John Badowski (BSc 1980) of the Toronto Police Service received a Meritorious Service Medal (civil division) from Gov. Gen. Adrienne Clarkson for leading a humanitarian mission during the 1994 Rwandan civil war. Badowski and his team volunteered in refugee camps in neighbouring Zaire.

Dietitian Kelly McQuillen (MHSc 1996) was named the 2002 Diabetes Educator of the Year by the LifeScan Educational Institute, a division of Johnson & Johnson, and the Canadian Diabetes Association for her commitment to educating First Nations Canadians about the disease.
