Filmmaker finds Second World War footage at U of T Archives

A CBC documentary, Canada’s War in Colour, will include Second World War footage of the U of T contingent of the Canadian Officers’ Training Corps. Filmmaker Karen Shopsowitz unearthed the 16-mm silent footage in the university’s archives, where it has been stored since 1968. Taped during 1940 and 1941, the film captures the men during their training regimens on campus and at Camp Niagara in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. The documentary is scheduled to air in January 2005. During the First World War, 624 members of the U of T community gave their lives, while 557 died in the Second World War.
