Remembering Churchill

Reading room named after the former British prime minister

“In War: Resolution, In Defeat: Defiance, In Victory: Magnanimity, In Peace: Goodwill.” The determined words of Winston Churchill have been chiselled into the wall of a new reading room named after the former British prime minister. Unveiled March 19, the Churchill Room is located in the Peter Munk and Melanie Bosanquet Munk wing of the John W. Graham Library at Trinity College.

Named in recognition of a gift of Churchill books and memorabilia from the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy, the room houses changing exhibits that include autographed first editions of Churchill’s works and mementoes such as a menu signed by Churchill from the shipboard dinner hosted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941 at Placentia Bay, Nfld. “Past leaders are too often forgotten, and the society felt that it was important to remind each generation of what Churchill stood for and achieved in the 20th century,” says librarian Linda Corman.
