St. George campus did it two years ago and U of T at Mississauga did it this summer. Now, U of T at Scarborough (UTSC) has decided to eliminate the three-year bachelor’s degree. Students registered for the 15-credit program prior to the summer of 2004 will remain eligible to complete their degree.
Discontinuing the three-year program is consistent with UTSC’s emphasis on writing proficiency, scientific literacy, computer competency and experiential learning, says Prof. Paul Thompson, the former vice-president and principal. He also notes that UTSC’s increasing focus on co-op programs, which require a four-year degree, has reduced the number of programs that can be completed in three years. As well, student interest in a three-year degree has been steadily decreasing, says Sue Horton, interim vice-principal (academic) and dean of UTSC. Governing Council approved the motion this summer.
