Varsity Stadium Gone

Crumbling landmark torn down

After nearly 80 years as a local landmark, U of T’s crumbling Varsity Stadium has been torn down. “It is sad to see it go,” says Bruce Kidd (BA 1965 UC), dean of physical education and health, of the site where he trained for his 1962 Commonwealth Games gold medal. “But it is essential for safety reasons that the stadium be demolished.” The university officially closed the stadium in December 2001. Plans for revitalization of the site, including the possibility of using it as residence and commercial space, are still being developed. Last April, the students rejected a levy that would have helped fund a new athletic and recreation centre and stadium.
