Model Critiques

Legendary architects Frank Gehry and Daniel Libeskind review graduate student designs

They came; they critiqued. And by the time they left, architectural titans Frank Gehry and Daniel Libeskind were inspired. On campus in April to review 11 student projects, Gehry and Libeskind spent a full day examining graduate students’ works – and pulling no punches in their constructive criticism. The architects advised against creating models that were purely sculptural; they also lauded students such as Yusef Frasier, whose project offered alternatives to the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto, including a light rapid transit system. Gehry was so impressed by Frasier that he quipped, “Libeskind and I are going to flip to see who hires you.”

Libeskind is currently working on New York’s new World Trade Center and designing the latest addition to the Royal Ontario Museum. Gehry is working on the redesign and expansion of the Art Gallery of Ontario.
