New Student Centre for UTSC

Students vote to contribute $60 a year each to project

A student centre is in the works at the University of Toronto at Scarborough (UTSC), and its funding comes from an unusual source: the students themselves.

UTSC students have voted to establish a fund, pending approval from university governance, by committing $60 per full-time student. The contributions will generate more than $14 million over the next 30 years to build and operate the new facility. The amount is the single largest commitment from U of T students in the university’s 174-year history. “This is cause for celebration,” says Hanif Thakor, Scarborough Campus Students’ Council president, who led the effort to create the fund. “Students will be leaving behind a significant legacy for those who follow them.”

The two-storey, 30,000-square-foot building will be located near the entrance to campus and will house student lounges, a restaurant/pub, student clubs, a computer lab, a games room, a bookstore and expanded food services. Construction is slated for completion as early as fall 2004.
