Bahen Centre for Information Technology
On Oct. 8, U of T officially opened the $108-million Bahen Centre for Information Technology. The eight-storey building on St. George Street is home to the department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Edward S. Rogers Sr. department of computer and electrical engineering, the division of engineering science and the department of mechanical and industrial engineering’s mechatronics and information engineering options. Research taking place at the Bahen Centre includes developing sophisticated computer graphics, and protecting wireless signals from noise and interference. The centre is named after donors John Bahen (BASc 1954, DEng Hon. 1999) and Margaret Bahen (Dip Occupational Therapy 1952).

Centre for Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology
The University of Toronto at Mississauga took a major stride toward its goal of being a world biotechnology leader on Oct. 30: it opened the Centre for Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology, a $7.5 million facility bringing together researchers in botany, chemistry, psychology and zoology. The 9,200-square-foot building will house a nuclear magnetic resonance suite, instruments for gene screening and sequencing, and research labs.
