When Wolodymyr George Danyliw died in April 2002, his children, Andrea (BA 1993 UC) and Andrew (BA 1991 NEW) Danyliw, decided to establish a foundation to honour their father’s mission of promoting Ukraine in Canada. “Our father taught us to be proud of our roots,” says Andrea. “It was very important to him that we celebrate our Ukrainian-Canadian heritage.”
The Wolodymyr George Danyliw Foundation has established a lecture series at U of T’s Centre for Russian and East European Studies (CREES). This fall Anders Åslund, director of the Russian and Eurasian Program and senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., delivered the inaugural lecture on Ukraine’s changing political landscape. The foundation also established the only contemporary Ukraine studies course in Canada, which is offered through the University of Toronto’s political science department.
Wolodymyr Danyliw was born in Western Ukraine in 1921, studied political science and law in Austria and participated in an international exchange with U of T’s Faculty of Law. He moved to Toronto in 1960, established a legal practice and dedicated his free time to his family and to championing Ukrainian rights.
