Gabriel Tan-Chen’s unsuccessful search for star trails leads to an unexpected photo opportunity at sunrise

Gabriel Tan-Chen was hunting for star trails over the lake as he wandered the Bronte Harbour in Oakville, Ontario. His search for mesmerizing shots of the night sky proved to be fruitless – but with sunrise fast approaching, Tan-Chen was instead drawn to the subtle light contrasting with the shadows of the log. “I was casually taking a few shots of the tree trunk,” he says. “By then, a little sunlight was streaming across the lake.”

Tan-Chen is currently a fourth-year computer science student at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He is inspired by the science behind art – such as understanding how aperture and focal length affect the way light refracts through the lens – and often experiments with lighting in nature photography. “I love the outdoors,” he says. “There’s something incredibly rewarding about being in the right place at the right time to compose a great shot.”
