Part of a series examining human beings’ eternal struggle with mortality, UTM grad Yannis Davy Guibinga’s photo, entitled “The Darkest Colour,” challenges negative stereotypes about death – often represented as a chillingly skeletal figure – and the colour black, which is often associated with death and mourning. In the photo, the Grim Reaper takes on a decidedly softer, female form. “I wanted to show death in a less violent and scary way,” says Guibinga.

A visual artist, Guibinga uses photography to explore the multiplicity of cultures and experiences in Africa and its diaspora. “I want to show a diverse and complex generation of young Africans who are both aware and proud of where they come from.” View more of Guibinga’s striking photos on his website.
