A Heartbreaking Stumble

Naushad Ali Husein caught Chanice Taylor-Chase as she fell – a step away from winning gold in the 2009 Ontario high school track and field finals at Varsity Centre

On June 6, 2009, Naushad Ali Husein was filling in as news editor at The Varsity when he decided to wander over to Varsity Centre. Crowding the stands were hundreds of young people, attending the Ontario high school track and field finals. One of those young people – Chanice Taylor-Chase, an accomplished hurdler and long jumper – was about to begin the junior girl’s 200-metre race. She had won all her qualifying heats and was favoured to take first place. As Husein looked on, camera poised to snap Taylor-Chase as she crossed the finish line, he gasped. One metre from the finish – and from winning the gold medal – she fell. “I saw it happening through my view-finder,” he says. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Being somewhat removed from U of T, I appreciate the magazine because of the “connect” it affords. Thanks for the publication.

Right place, right time. But feeling sorry for Taylor-Chase though. Looks like a rough fall. I hope she’s okay.
