Novy Warouw shares a stolen moment with a stranger

As Novy Warouw wandered through a school backyard in the mountainous village of Ocoa in the Dominican Republic, she noticed a small figure washing a mango on the opposite side of the fence. The young girl was the first person Warouw had encountered upon her arrival in the Caribbean country early in 2013 to participate in a house-building project. “There was something about her curious stare,” says Warouw, a 2011 professional writing graduate of U of T Mississauga. “I was a foreigner in her territory – an unusual sight in her everyday life.”

The girl eventually befriended Warouw’s volunteering group, taught them Spanish, braided their hair and helped them carry buckets of sand to make cement for a new home. “I like capturing that shared moment when you exchange glances with a stranger,” says Warouw. “She didn’t have time to react, pose or be shy when I took the photo – it’s a true representation of the moment.”
