UTSC history and psychology student Aniqa Rahman was riveted by spoken-word poet Faduma Mohamed’s passionate performance in 2015’s Trans* Inclusive Monologues, presented by the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union and Women and Trans* Centre. Sensing the monologue’s close when Mohamed reached for her pashmina, Rahman captured the moment on camera, titling the shot “Closure.”

In the darkened Leigha Lee Browne Theatre, lighting was a challenge, but Rahman used no flash, just a 50 mm Nikon lens. She says, “Many have asked if I added Faduma’s extended shadow, and the answer is no. I was fortunate that the theatre’s lighting worked in our favour.”

Of her lifelong passion, Rahman says, “Photography has become a drive for me to not only be creative but to explore beauty or truth in this world. It is a form of expression and a way of depicting a narrative through my lens.”
