About University of Toronto Magazine

University of Toronto Magazine is published twice a year by U of T Communications to celebrate the university’s research and teaching excellence and to shine a light on the rich and diverse communities of our three campuses – St. George, Mississauga and Scarborough.

While University of Toronto Magazine features alumni, faculty, researchers, staff and students, the views expressed or implied do not necessarily reflect those of the University of Toronto or the U of T Communications team.

The magazine is read by more than 370,000 of the university’s alumni and friends around the world. Although the print edition is available only to members of the University of Toronto community, anyone can sign up for our email newsletter.

University of Toronto Magazine and the environment

The magazine bears the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Mix label, which means that the wood used to make the paper is from FSC-certified material, recycled materials and other controlled sources.

University of Toronto Magazine is printed on FSC-certified Flo Gloss (45-pound) paper. The magazine cover and gatefold is printed on Somerset Gloss (70-pound). No ancient forests are being used for the pulp of either stock.

The United States Postal Service requires that the magazine be wrapped in a plastic polybag for delivery. Some readers have expressed concern over the potential waste and environmental damage of using such a wrap. We agree this situation is not ideal, and have ceased using a polybag everywhere outside of the U.S.

We encourage readers who would like to help reduce our environmental footprint further to trade their paper edition of the magazine for the electronic one. Electronic subscribers receive an email message twice a year with links to the magazine’s latest stories. By reducing our print and mailing costs, we are able to invest more in the editorial content of the magazine.

Letters to the editor and website comments

University of Toronto Magazine seeks to promote understanding and awareness of the university and encourages readers to express their opinions on the issues presented in its pages. The magazine welcomes comments at its website and publishes letters to the editor. All comments and letters may be edited for clarity, civility and length. Due to space constraints, the magazine may be able to publish only a representative sample of letters received. As a guideline, we generally don’t publish letters or comments longer than 150 words.

The University of Toronto recognizes that all members of the university community have the right to freedom of speech and expression, which means the right to comment on any issue as well as the right to criticize the university. The university also fosters an environment of tolerance and mutual respect. Every member should be able to work, live, teach and learn in a university free from discrimination and harassment.

Requests for changes to editorial content

The University of Toronto considers the editorial and promotional content of University of Toronto Magazine part of the public record and strives to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and quality.

On occasion, U of T Communications receives requests for changes to, or deletions of, items published online or in print, which could include stories, videos and photographs. In considering these requests, the department adheres to the following practices:

  • Errors of fact are corrected online and in the following print issue of University of Toronto Magazine.
  • New information to be added is at the discretion of University of Toronto Magazine.
  • Unpublishing of online items is restricted to situations involving fabricated information. From time to time, we receive requests to remove a photograph illustrating an article, because someone in the photograph does not want their image used in this way or there is a threat to safety. Where these images involve the inadvertent capture of the requestor, UTC attempts to accommodate such requests; please contact uoft.magazine@utoronto.ca
