A packed house at Arrow Group Innovation Hall looks on as Professor Linda Johnston (above centre, in black and white gown) is officially welcomed as the new principal of U of T Scarborough and vice-president of U of T.
“I consider the role of principal of UTSC to be the highlight of my career,” Johnston declared, outlining her vision for a “culture of care” during her installation address. Her top priority? Creating a healthy environment where every member of the campus community feels supported in achieving their own definition of success.
Johnston, whose career spans multiple continents and leadership roles, becomes UTSC’s 12th principal at a pivotal moment in the campus’s evolution. Major building developments are underway, including the Myron and Berna Garron Health Sciences Complex, set to open in 2026, a retail and parking complex, and Indigenous House. An extension of the campus’s strategic plan is also in the works.
Johnston’s installation follows a time-honoured U of T tradition – an official ceremony that includes a robing ritual, the oath of office, remarks from dignitaries and the highly anticipated installation address.
Adding a personal touch, Johnston paid tribute to her Australian roots with a processional to Men at Work’s “Down Under” and wrapped up the ceremony with AC/DC’s heavy metal anthem “Back in Black.”
