Future founders in the making? Quite possibly. A majority of U of T students told us they’d consider starting their own company one day – for the freedom, the creativity or the chance to revive a previous idea. First-year social sciences student Rutendo Mapuranga, for example, ran a baking business at 16. Others dream of launching research ventures, exploring space or building sustainability startups.
Still, not everyone is ready to take the leap. Students cited money, time and uncertainty about having a strong enough concept. “Part of me fears failing,” says Sara Fujii, a first-year student in life sciences. For some, a desire to pursue a career in an established field such as law – or plans beyond Canada – make entrepreneurship less appealing.
