Emanuel Adler, a professor of international relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is the inaugural holder of the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Chair in Israeli Studies at the University of Toronto. Born in Uruguay, Adler immigrated to Israel in 1970. He studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received his doctorate from the University of California at Berkeley.
The chair was funded with a $1.5-million gift from Andrea and Charles Bronfman in 1997 and an additional $1 million from U of T. Based in the department of political science, Adler will promote the teaching of Israeli studies and work with scholars in a variety of disciplines. “This is a wonderful opportunity to study Israel – its history, society and politics – from the distinctive perspective of the development of Israeli identity,” says Adler.
