Gift will fund scholarship for students from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan

At 90, Shou-Yun Pang knows a few things about life: he knows that hard work brings results and that education is the key to a better existence.

Pang had no previous connection to the University of Toronto when he informed the office of gift planning in the Division of University Advancement of his wish to establish a scholarship. The Shou-Yun Pang Scholarship will be created with a current gift of $225,000 in Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) and will fund U of T scholarships for students from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Pang has also ensured the future stability of this award by including a bequest in his will that will leave the residue of his estate to U of T when he dies.

Pang, a resident of Toronto, was formerly a professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. “In 1999, I saw an article in Sing Tao that mentioned U of T wanted more overseas students,” says Pang, through a translator. “Canada has been so good to me. I wanted to give something back.”
