The subway train at the top is from North Korea, the one below it from Germany. They are similar because the North Korean train was purchased from Germany. U of T Mississauga history professor Tong Lam says neither image is unusual on its own. But by juxtaposing them, he encourages his viewers, and his students, to think about context. “In the West, we consider North Korea to be a society of surveillance. But what about our own society, especially in light of Edward Snowden’s revelations about the American government’s snooping? Have corporations such as Microsoft and Apple become the ‘Dear Leaders’ of our ‘free’ world?” Both photos by Tong Lam.
