Ceremonial gates – named to honour U of T alumni – will soon grace the university entranceway at King’s College Road and College Street.
The Alumni Gates are part of the Open Space Plan, which will revitalize the St. George campus. During the first phase of the plan, the university will restore the precinct that includes King’s College Road, the Plaza at Convocation Hall and Simcoe Walk.
To mark the 100th anniversary of the University of Toronto Alumni Association (UTAA), being celebrated this year, alumni will be asked to each contribute a minimum of $100 in support of the first phase of the project. The university will match every $100 donation with $166, for a combined total of $266.
“This is an opportunity for U of T graduates from every college, faculty and school to come together to create a symbolic and dignified architectural feature that will enhance our university and the city,” says the Hon. Mr. Justice Joseph James (BA 1967 SMC, LLB 1971), UTAA president.
The Alumni Gates will be a proud landmark and will honour alumni for their contributions to the project. Completion date is set for 2002, the university’s 175th anniversary.
