Professor Kim Vicente (BASc 1985), a leading expert in human factors engineering, is the first engineer to be awarded U of T’s $100,000 McLean Award (endowed by the late William McLean). Founding director of the Cognitive Engineering Laboratory, Vicente specializes in making new technologies safer and more user-friendly.
In June, three undergraduate architecture students, Joy Charbonneau, Coryn Kempster and Noam Lamdan, came first in an original design project sponsored by the Hart House Farm Committee. Their design, The Caretakers’ House, beat out 32 other entries for the $3,000 prize. Construction began in August.
The School of Continuing Studies and Random House of Canada recently awarded the first $500 Random House of Canada Student Award in Writing to Dave McIntyre for his short story about a pharmaceutical plant worker’s reaction to the transformation of his friendly co-worker into a serial killer. The prize was created following a $30,000 donation by the publisher to the school.
