Making Law Accessible

Law students with disabilities now have a revamped, barrier-free classroom thanks to a $500,000 donation by McCarthy Tétrault LLP Foundation and alumni who work at the law firm. The McCarthy Tétrault Classroom contains free-moving chairs for students in wheelchairs. Advanced acoustics have also been added, and the classroom has video- and audio-conference systems that will allow students to interact with other schools or guest lecturers. “We were provided with marvellous tools [from U of T] that equip us to have satisfying professional lives, so that motivated alumni to make this donation,” says Niels Ortved (BA 1968 VIC, LLB 1971), managing partner of the law firm’s Toronto office.
