Actor Christopher Plummer and filmmaker Atom Egoyan (BA 1982 TRIN) were among 18 honorary degree recipients at convocation ceremonies in June. Others recognized for their outstanding contributions were: Richard Bradshaw, conductor and general director of the Canadian Opera Company; Jeffrey Skoll, co-founder of eBay; as well as philanthropists Edwin (“Honest Ed”), Anne and David Mirvish.
University Professors Edward Davison of electrical and computer engineering and Tak Mak of medical biophysics have garnered two of five Killam Prizes awarded annually to eminent Canadian scholars and scientists.
Five U of T researchers were chosen to receive Sloan Research Fellowships, which recognize promising young scholars. Professors Peter Andolfatto (zoology), James Colliander (mathematics), Kentaro Hori (physics), Hae-Young Kee (physics) and Daniel Lidar (chemistry) have the distinction of taking five of the six fellowships given to Canadian scholars.
Professors Molly Shoichet and Kim Vicente of applied science and engineering received one of Canada’s most prestigious science awards, the Steacie Fellowship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.
