The University of Toronto has named Senator Vivienne Poy (MA 1997) to succeed Henry N.R. Jackman as chancellor of the university on July 1.
Elected for a three-year term, the chancellor is the ceremonial head of the university and acts as ambassador to all alumni. He or she is also the University of Toronto’s senior volunteer.
Poy has served on the university’s Governing Council and played a leading role in the establishment of the Lee Chair in Chinese Thought and Culture, as well as the Vivienne Poy (Lee Tak Wai) Chancellor’s Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Poy was appointed to the Senate in 1998, and is the first Canadian of Asian descent to be named to the upper house. She is also an entrepreneur, fashion designer and volunteer with a number of cultural and social organizations.
