All in the Family

Three generations of women work or study at U of T

It’s not unusual for several generations of one family to have attended the university, but we suspect it is quite rare for grandmother, daughter and granddaughter to have worked and studied at U of T, all at the same time.

Merrijoy Kelner (BA 1950 UC, MA 1965, PhD 1969) arrived on campus in the 1940s. She completed her graduate degrees, became a sociology professor and is now a professor emerita. Her daughter, Lee Weisser (BA 1975 VIC), is completing a master’s of education at OISE/UT and also works as a program manager at the Ontario Society for Training & Development. Her granddaughter, Julia Weisser, just completed her first year and intends to major in criminology or sociology.

When Lee first attended U of T, it was still typical for a student to go to university in her hometown, but when her granddaughter decided on
U of T Kelner was “amazed, surprised and pleased,” she says. The three generations have truly made attending U of T a family affair.
