The Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research recently gave $300,000 to the university’s Faculty of Medicine to perform a major upgrade of its HIV/AIDS laboratory in the Medical Sciences building. The upgrade will make U of T a real contender on the HIV research front, says Dr. Kelly MacDonald, director of the HIV Research Program at the university: “This innovative gift will provide a significant opportunity to improve existing programs and to test exciting new HIV vaccine strategies that we have developed.” Over the last decade, the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS has risen tenfold to 53 million worldwide.
