Members and alumni of U of T’s Faculty of Music took centre stage at this year’s Juno Awards, for their outstanding achievements in Canadian music. The Gryphon Trio won in the category of “Classical Album of the Year (Solo or Chamber Ensemble)” for its CD Canadian Premieres, which includes works by U of T composers Christos Hatzis, Gary Kulesha and Chan Ka Nin. The Trio members – Annalee Patipatanakoon (violin), Roman Borys (cello) and Jamie Parker (piano) – teach chamber music at U of T. Isabel Bayrakdarian (BASc 1997) and Professor Jamie Parker, the R. E. Edwards Chair in Piano Performance, took home “Classical Album of the Year (Vocal or Choral Ensemble)” for Azulao.
Professor Stephen Scherer of molecular and medical genetics is this year’s winner of the prestigious Steacie Prize, awarded annually by the National Research Council.
Four U of T faculty members were named to the Order of Canada in January. Professor Morton Beiser of psychiatry, conductor Robert Cooper of music and Professor Emeritus John Laidlaw of medicine were named members while University Professor Emeritus Martin Friedland of law was promoted to companion, the highest distinction within the order.
